We are very happy to start our series of video statements about gender, design, the present and future situation. The iphiGenia Gender Design Award 2020 #iphi2020 was postponed due to Covid-19. Instead, the international Gender Design Network / iGDN is offering space for video statements and interviews by former iphi winners and renowned design experts / members of the iphi Research Committee international.

Why gender design is sustainable design!

Claudia Herling

is a German designer, research assistant at the University of Heilbronn at the faculty of the IT and co-owner of the design studio digitale frische. She is vice chairperson of the international Gender Design Network e. V. and expert for gender and (digital) design. She has published and taught in the field of design for 15 years.

Dr. Menna Agha

 is a Nubian architect and researcher, she was a visiting assistant professor and a spatial justice fellow at the University of Oregon. Menna holds a Doctorate in Architecture, a Masters in Design, and a Bachelor of Architecture Engineering. Her research interests include the questions of gender, space, territory, and displacement. Menna Agha supports the iphiGenia Gender Design Award as consulting expert in the RCi (iphi Reseach Committee international).

Ina von Rumohr

German designer, entrepreneur and university teacher in Cologne, Germany. Co-founder of moculade Design Cologne, designstudio for print and digital media. Corporate Design, Communication Design and UX expert. Board member at iGDN. Jury member for the iphiGenia Gender Design Award.

Uta Brandes

Prof. Dr. em. Uta Brandes is a German design expert, theoretician and author. She is co-founder of the international Gender Design Network/iGDN and the chair of iGDN Germany. From 1995 to 2015 she was Professor of Gender and Design and Design Research at the Koeln International School of Design.

Milena Mussi

started her career as marketing and communication manager in the fashion business. Since 1995 she is Managing Director of Iosa Ghini Associates, an internationally known architecture and design company. She works in Bologna and Milan, and lives in Bologna.

Dr. Kajsa G. Eriksson

is a Professor of Visual Art with specialization in Forms of Visual Art at the HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design, Gothenburg University, Sweden. She holds a PhD in Design and runs the independent collaborative arts-based research studio Vague Research Studios.

Griselda Flesler

Professor of Design and Gender Studies Department at FADU, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Researcher at the American Art Institute, University of Buenos Aires.

Miles Min Chen

multi-disciplinary designer; he designs from objects to technological products and interior architecture. He works for both Chinese and Western companies. He studied in Cologne, Germany, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and Milan, Italy. He lives and works in Hangzhou, China.

Alice Rawsthorn,

famous design critic and blogger, author of design books, renowned speaker shares her view on genderdesign.  Alice Rawsthorn supports the iGDN and the #iphi being a member of the international Research Committee RCi. She lives in London.

Dr. Seba Ali

Assistant Professor of Music at the Lebanese American University in Beirut – was the winner of the iphigenia Gender Design Award 2019 / Revolution. She is sharing her thoughts on transitions towards new norms to come, changes to last and on what role Gender and Design are playing in these times.

Design shapes the world. Therefore it is necessary to bring gender awareness to the design process, to avoid both gender blindness and gender stereotypes.
Every year, the iphiGenia Gender Design Award honors the world’s best gender sensitive designs.
